CURRICULUM

The medical curriculum at NUI Galway is an integrated systems-based curriculum that facilitates students’ integrated understanding of the life sciences and clinical practice. Particular emphasis is placed on the acquisition of history-taking and physical examination skills, and on clinical reasoning. Students enjoy early clinical exposure and they spend the second half of the programme immersed in a variety of clinical environments, including hospital wards, outpatient clinics, surgical theatre and primary care.

TEACHING FACILITIES AND TEACHING HOSPITALS

Medical students complete most of their pre-clinical teaching in Áras Moyola, a state-of-the-art healthcare teaching facility on the main campus. Completion of the Human Biology Building will make additional world class facilities available to students. In the clinical phase, students receive clinical teaching in the adjacent University Hospital Galway and in satellite medical academies throughout the region.

RESEARCH

Developing medical students’ research skills is an essential element of the medical programme at NUI Galway. All students are invited to complete a funded summer research project, and many of our students present their work at our annual undergraduate research day in Galway, as well as at international scientific conferences.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Galway is a beautiful, safe, and healthy city with an attractive location along the shores of Galway Bay. The scenery in the hinterlands of Connemara is spectacular. The University campus is easy to navigate and enjoys a very pleasant location along the river Corrib. Galway city has a population of 80,000 and the city has a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere and is a very popular tourist destination attracting visitors from all over the world.

STUDENT ACCOMODATION

NUI Galway has access to modern, reasonably priced student accommodation and our Accommodation Office assists students in finding suitable accommodation. Galway is a small city, and because of the network of free bicycle depots and excellent public transport system, students find it very easy to get around.
