The School of Dental Science works in partnership with the co-located Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH) Educational programmes encompass undergraduate, postgraduate, auxiliary and continuing education programmes across all the specialties in dentistry. The Dublin Dental University Hospital is a national centre of excellence in education, research and patient care. The School has an active research ethos with a research led curriculum and opportunities for all students to actively engage in research. Students also have the opportunity to work in other European dental schools as part of the Erasmus Exchange programme. Located in the busy centre of the city, DDUH provides primary, secondary and tertiary dental care for patients at a local and national level.

CURRICULUM

The curriculum is a hybrid of problem-based learning, laboratory classes, lectures, and clinical placements with early clinical exposure. Students must demonstrate competency on laboratory simulators before progressing to the supervised treatment of patients in Year 2. Students have the opportunity to work in teams with students in the auxiliary programmes in the School. By fifth year, students are expected to have undertaken a wide range of treatments similar to those provided in general dental practice.

TEACHING FACILITIES

The Dublin Dental University Hospital is a centre of excellence in patient care, education and research, all integrated in the one building on the Trinity College campus. The DDUH has state of the art outpatient clinics and clinical skills laboratories. Additional facilities include lecture rooms, seminar rooms, computer rooms, a staff-student common room and research laboratories. The School utilises contemporary resources in information and communication technology and has a special library hosting the largest collection of dental literature in Ireland. Increasingly, courses are being offered online.

RESEARCH

The Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH) is strongly committed to improving health, in particular oral health, in Ireland through research to further our knowledge and understanding of dental science and oral biology. Research is one of the three core activities of the DDUH and our commitment to excellence in research and research-led teaching is evident in the high quality of research output in recent years made possible by strategic investment in infrastructure and staff. Our research is recognized internationally and many DDUH staff members are active in the international research arena, publishing in high impact journals, presenting and chairing at international conferences and through membership of editorial boards. Our vision is to continue to be a leading research-led Dental School and to continue to produce research with the potential to enhance oral health outcomes.

STUDENT ACCOMODATION

Trinity Hall is a large, friendly complex with its own Junior Common Room that organises many social activities and outings. Trinity Hall accommodates over 1,000 students in shared single or twin apartments with several different room types. This well-equipped residence is 4 kms from the city centre with good public transport connections by LUAS (tram) and bus.
